Research Areas
Photonic and optoelectronic devices: modeling, design and fabrication
Optoelectronic device modeling
Physics-based numerical models of semiconductor lasers, semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) and photodetectors, using transfer-matrix, transmission-line, finite-difference and beam-propagation methods. The aim is accurate prediction of the static and ultrafast dynamic behavior of devices before they are built.
Nonlinear optical signal processing
Four-wave mixing, cross-phase modulation and pulse shaping in semiconductor optical amplifiers; wavelength conversion; and all-optical logic gates (AND, XOR) for high-speed optical networks, including SOA-based Mach-Zehnder and Sagnac interferometer switches.
Photonic crystals and Fano resonances
Design of photonic-crystal nanocavity-waveguide systems with sharp, high-quality-factor Fano transmission lineshapes for filters, switches and sensors, analysed with 3D FDTD and temporal coupled-mode theory.
Terahertz metamaterials and sensors
EIT-like resonances in terahertz metamaterial sensors, including tunable perovskite-enhanced designs, studied with multipole decomposition and equivalent-circuit models.
Micro-fabrication
Process development for micro-scale devices in the Microfabrication Lab: photolithography, etching, thin-film deposition and oxidation.
